Key Study Areas

SJTRI’s scientific and medical professionals are spearheading key preclinical studies in a variety of areas, largely focused on cardiovascular research. A few major study areas of interest are listed below:

Cardiac Electrophysiology
  • Arrhythmogenicity of catheter-based skeletal myoblast injections guided by
intracardiac echo in infarcted adult miniature swine
  • Transplantation of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells does not alter arrhythmia threshold
  • Epicardial fibroblast injection modifies electrical conduction in atrial myocardium
  • Autologous fibroblast transplantation into myocardial infarcts in swine: effects on arrhythmogenesis and arrhythmic threshold
  • Effects on cardiac function and arrhythmia threshold of high dose of skeletal myoblast injection in swine with myocardial infarction

Flow Cytometry
  • Identification and characterization of different cell types involved in vascular injury and repair following balloon angioplasty and stenting
  • Comprehensive assessment of the cellular recruitment, proliferation and differentiation events involved in host response to extracellular matrix scaffold resorbable biomaterial implant for repair of the infarcted heart
  • Identification of molecular targets, oncoproteins and cytokines to detect modulation of signal transduction pathways of different antiproliferative, anti-neoplastic and anti-inflammatory agents in the investigation of stent restenosis. Includes monitoring of cytotoxic and cytostatic effects of key molecular regulators of the cell cycle

Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery
  • Left ventricular free wall replacement with a tissue-engineered patch
  • Polymer aortic valve replacement
  • Ischemic heart creation and cell injection
  • Pressure sensor implantation in the heart
  • Heterotopic heart transplantation
  • Ischemic hind limb model and cell injection

Physiology
  • Interventional procedures: studies involving PTCA, brachytherapy, and coronary stents (baremetal, drug-eluting and bioerrodable)
  • Patch implants in infarcted myocardium
  • Broad range of histomorphometry and histopathology evaluations

Tissue Engineering
  • NIH-sponsored, internally funded and corporate-sponsored tissue engineering studies in areas including:

o Vascular grafts

o Heart valve replacement

o Myocardial tissue repair
